Ormond A. MacDougald, PhD

Ormond A. MacDougald is the John A. Faulkner Collegiate Professor of Physiology at the University of Michigan School of Medicine. His group investigates how adipocytes throughout the body develop, function, and interact with other cell types near and afar.

Ormond obtained his BSc from the University of Guelph, MS and PhD from Michigan State University, and performed postdoctoral studies at Johns Hopkins University with M. Daniel Lane.  His research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1996, and is bolstered by funding from foundations and industry. He has advised 18 graduate students, 18 postdoctoral fellows, and 56 high school, undergraduate, and medical students. He has also served on 41 preliminary examinations and 71 doctoral committees. He currently directs a T32 postdoctoral program on basic diabetes research, and has directed the Physiology Graduate Program and Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships.

Other service includes ad hoc and permanent membership on NIH study sections, organization of Keystone and other scientific symposia, and membership on editorial boards. He is a Fellow of The Obesity Society as well as of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received a Fulbright Scholar’s Award for his sabbatical leave at the University of Cambridge. Dr. MacDougald is the recipient of the Henry Pickering Bowditch Award, and the Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen Distinguished Mentor and Scientist Award, both from the American Physiological Society. 

Ormond MacDougald, PhD has received grants from Regeneron, Agilent, and NIH. However, he will not be discussing the business lines or products of her employer in the context of this educational activity.
