When It's Not Your Thyroid

July 21, 2020

Session Description: Patients often present to endocrinology with symptoms of thyroid dysfunction but normal thyroid function testing. Effective communication with such patients can be challenging. This session will discuss the data for the specificity of hypo/hyper-thyroid symptom and the differential diagnoses for fatigue and other nonspecific symptoms of thyroid dysfunction.

Faculty: James V. Hennessey, MD
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the lack of specificity of most symptoms of thyroid dysfunction.
  2. Explain how to best communicate evidence supporting the accuracy of TSH testing as a hypothyroidism screening tool.
  3. Identify nonthyroidal disorders which may cause symptoms similar to thyroid dysfunction.
