What Endocrinologists Should Know About Female Hormonal Contraceptives

Session Description: This session will investigate how to manage women with migraines, history of DVT or risk factors, higher CV risk, perimenopause, PCOS, and hirsutism.

Learning Objectives:

After this session, attendees will be able to:

  1. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of various hormonal contraceptive formulations in women of reproductive age who have common endocrinopathies including diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, or hyperandrogenism disorders (e.g., polycystic ovary syndrome, CAH).
  2. To initiate hormone contraceptives in women of reproductive age and a history of risk factors for cardiovascular and thromboembolic disease.
  3. To initiate and manage hormonal contraceptive therapy in perimenopausal women (> 45 years old) with severe hot flashes, low bone mineral density or personal preference for such therapy.
