CKD and Bone Disease

Session Description: This session will review the effect of renal dysfunction on bone health and how to determine whether a patient has osteoporosis or renal osteodystrophy. The use of medications in renal impairment will be discussed.

  1. Recognize the effect of renal disease on bone metabolism.
  2. Select patients who should undergo bone biopsy prior to initiation of pharmacologic therapy for osteoporosis.
  3. Prescribe appropriate osteoporosis therapy to patients with chronic renal insufficiency.
