Perioperative Management of Pituitary Tumors

Session Description: This session will give an overview of perioperative (pre- per- and post-operative) management of patients with pituitary adenomas.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Outline pre-operative evaluation of patients with pituitary adenomas (emphasis on cortisol—should all patients be tested? What is the free T4 level that is safe?).
  2. Outline post-operative management of patients with pituitary adenomas (emphasis on cortisol evaluation and replacement, diabetes insipidus and hyponatremia).
  3. Describe the management of patients with pituitary adenomas in the operating room (glucocorticoid-stress dose, presence of the pathologist for Cushing's disease [?], neuronavigation).
