Patient Perspectives on Medical Treatment of Obesity

January 27, 2026

Lived experience helping to create the medical obesity treatment guidelines of tomorrow.

Effective treatment guidelines  for obesity integrate patient perspectives with the best available medical information. With this in mind, the Endocrine Society is updating their clinical practice guidelines on the medical treatment of obesity.

In late January 2026, people with recent or current experience living with obesity participated in online listening sessions to share their perspectives and ideas with the Endocrine Society’s panel of medical professionals. Thank you to all those who participated and who expressed interest in participating.

Patient partners help shape medical practice guidelines

Ground breaking medical advancements such anti-obesity medications like GLP-1s, recent innovations in bariatric surgery, and other approaches are changing how patients and healthcare providers think about obesity treatment. Treatments for obesity should reflect this new understanding, as well as patient perspectives.

Input shared by patient partners at the Listening Session is being carefully considered by the Endocrine Society’s panel of medical professionals as part of the guideline development process. The Guideline Development Panel will also consider medical best practices and research. Learn more about the guideline development process.

The updated guidelines will be used by international healthcare professionals and patients with obesity to make informed decisions about their care. The updated guidelines are slated for publication in late 2026.

Sign-up for updates to stay informed about opportunities to provide feedback on the guideline and to receive notification when the final publication is released.
