Sexual dimorphism — biological differences that are determined by sex — are a widespread phenomenon affecting almost every organ of the human body. The adrenal cortex in particular is impacted by sex and an increasing number of studies have reported differences in terms of transcriptomics, hormone production, and adrenal tissue renewal between males and females. To what extent androgens act directly or indirectly on the adrenal cortex is presently unclear. A recent article in Endocrinology by Toews et al now reveals an unexpected role for CBG in shaping the sexual dimorphism of the adrenal cortex. This commentary goes into more detail about the latest research.
