Tran and his colleagues, writing in JCEM, examined excess mortality in over 30,000 patients who suffered fragility nonhip fractures in 2001, and found substantial excess mortality that lasted for up to ten years. Vavanikunnel and colleagues looked at the effect of diabetes on incidence of low-trauma fractures, and found it to be elevated in type 1 patients with poor glycemic control as well as in type 2 patients using rosiglitazone and pioglitazone. Cai and coauthors established a disturbing association between urinary triclosan, an antibacterial added to many consumer products, and reduced bone mineral density, along with increased osteoporosis, in women. Grey and colleagues found a surprisingly long-term beneficial effect on bone mineral density of zoledronate delivered at an average interval of over 5 years.
In Endocrinology, Rufus-Membere and colleagues establish that bone impact microindentation, a way of assessing bone hardness, discriminates prior fracture and parental hip fracture, and may be valuable for assessing fracture risk. Zaidi and colleagues advance the hypothesis that an increase in serum follicle-stimulating hormone is the principal driver of perimenopausal osteoporosis and obesity. Lung and coauthors establish how bone marrow stromal cells can repress estrogen receptor activity in bone metastases of breast cancer, although the repression can be defeated by tumor mutations.
In Endocrine Reviews, Black and coauthors discuss atypical femur fractures that can be induced by bisphonate use but are >1000 times less common than typical fractures that bisphosphonates prevent. Bouillon and colleagues discuss the extra-skeletal actions of vitamin D: despite associations between poor vitamin D status and a variety of conditions, results from vitamin D supplementation trials are mixed. Hardy and coauthors evaluate the long-term effects on bone of glucocorticoid excess, including exogenous glucocorticoids.
In Journal of the Endocrine Society, Haas and LeBoff discuss the value osteoanabolic agents, one of two major classes of approved therapies for osteoporosis. Muniz Fighera and colleagues provide a systematic review of the effects of cross-sex hormone therapy in transgender people on bone mass, noting some effect on the lumbar spine of transgender women. Asadipooya and Uy discuss the role of the receptor for advanced glycation end products in the effects of diabetes on bone, concluding that a soluble form of the receptor has limited potential for investigation or as a therapeutic.
