In Journal of the Endocrine Society, Fosam and colleagues describe their use of the lipoprotein insulin resistance index as a simple and clinically useful method for assessing insulin resistance in South Asians. Chan and associates evaluate risk factors for pancreatic cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes, concluding that diabetic microvascular complications, especially chronic kidney disease, are associated with developing the cancer. Mongraw-Chaffin et al. find that in a population of non-obese African Americans, visceral fat is associated with the development of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

In Endocrinology, Manchanda and coauthors report that, in rat pancreatic beta cells, the glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor shows increased cell surface levels, internalization, and endosomal membrane activity compared with the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor, which is, in contrast, associated with increased plasma membrane recycling, reduced desensitization, and enhanced downstream signal amplification. Habibi and associates find that, in female mice, extracellular mineralocorticoid receptor signaling increases endothelial cell-derived exosomal CD36 levels, resulting in increased uptake of CD36 by skeletal muscle cells. This contributes to lipid metabolic disorders and soleus insulin resistance. Lu et al. describe how in a mouse alpha cell-specific thioredoxin-interacting protein knockout, downregulation of the protein is associated with reduced glucagon secretion, and suggest that this may contribute to the glucose-lowering effects observed in knockouts with induced diabetes.

Writing in JCEM, Yang and colleagues describe impressive results achieving remission of type 2 diabetes in almost half of patients in the treatment arm of a study of an intermittent calorie-restricted diet. Peng et al. report that in the Women's Health Across the Nation Multipollutant Study, urinary levels of some phthalates were associated with the development of diabetes in White but not Black or Asian women. Shannon and colleagues provide an account of some effects of increasing blood glucose levels in healthy volunteers: it seems major lipid pools in skeletal muscle are unperturbed by sustained increases in glucose availability, suggesting that glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity drive insulin resistance through distinct pathways.

In Endocrine Reviews, Carré and coauthors review explanations for the link between coxsackie virus B infection and development of type 1 diabetes, then discuss the implications for possible interventions. Oost and colleagues review the causes and cardiovascular effects of hypomagnesia in type 2 diabetes. And Ramzy and associates describe encouraging progress toward the development of a treatment for type 1 diabetes based on implanted, stem cell-derived, islets.
