an Endocrine Society Thematic Issue

Read our special collection of journal articles, published in 2022–2023, focused on endocrine neoplasia and cancer! Curation of the collection was guided by Altmetric Attention Scores and subject relevance.

In a Perspective in Journal of the Endocrine Society, Newey and Newell-Price question current screening and surveillance guidelines for patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, pointing to possible iatrogenic harms. In a retrospective cohort study, Chan and coauthors report that diabetic microvascular complications, especially stage 1, 2, and 3A chronic kidney disease, were associated with pancreatic cancer. Martín-Román and colleagues report how a retrospective study showed that vitamin D deficiency prior to total thyroidectomy protected against post-surgical hypoparathyroidism, suggesting the possibility of pre-conditioning parathyroid glands.

In Endocrinology, Ma and associates report that sequencing of immune cells from metastasis-bearing murine lungs indicates that the liver X receptor meets key criteria for selective nuclear receptor modulation, opening an avenue for development of ligands for precision pharmacology. Dey and colleagues describe using an in vivo xenograft preclinical mouse model of triple-negative breast cancer to show that expression of estrogen receptor β1 significantly reduced both primary tumor growth and metastasis. Tong et al. find that exposing a murine model of breast cancer to methyl and propyl paraben at levels within the Food and Drug Administration’s “human acceptable daily intake” level led to increased tumor volume and pulmonary metastasis; the chemicals, which are widely used in personal care products, cosmetics, and food, impaired tumor RNA metabolism.

In JCEM, González Briceño and coauthors report a high prevalence of endocrine disorders in a large cohort of children with brain tumors. Wang and colleagues report that an oncogene product called PDZK1 interacting protein 1 is activated in papillary thyroid cancer, which has increased in prevalence rapidly in recent decades. Ullmann et al. review controversies in the management of low-risk, differentiated thyroid cancer, which is over-diagnosed but also increasing in incidence.

Lerario and colleagues provide an update on the biology and genomics of adrenal carcinomas in Endocrine Reviews. Komarla and associates summarize recent advances in our understanding of autophagy in endocrine-dependent tumors. And Garcia-Carbonero and coauthors summarize new treatment possibilities for gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma.
