In Journal of the Endocrine Society, Fadeyibi and coauthors report that caveolar lipid rafts are essential to androgen-induced neurotoxicity in a rat neuron cell line. Ottarsdottir and colleagues find that high levels of triglycerides are associated with low levels of testosterone in postmenopausal women. Metz et al. report that a variant of the protein nepmucin is associated with lower levels of high density lipoprotein in a healthy human population.

In Endocrinology, Franczyk and associates describe how adipocyte-specific gene knockout mice with a reduced concentration of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide in their white adipose tissue have an impaired ability to suppress fat oxidation after feeding. Heyde and coauthors review the contributions of white and brown adipose tissues to the circadian regulation of metabolism. Scalzo and coauthors describe translational studies suggesting that endocrine therapies for breast cancer may disrupt and allow hypertrophy of adipocyte precursors, potentially leading to ectopic lipid deposition that may be linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

In JCEM, Wang et al. report that among obese or dyslipidemic adults, higher levels of serum microRNA-122 are associated with a smaller reduction in hepatic fat in response to weight-loss interventions. Nasr and colleagues establish that in midlife women, higher visceral adipose tissue mass predicts worse high density lipoprotein metrics two years later, and thus possibly future cardiovascular disease. Shannon and associates find that in healthy volunteers, major lipid muscle pools in skeletal muscle are unaffected by sustained hyperglycemia, suggesting that glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity drive insulin resistance via different mechanisms.

Writing in Endocrine Reviews, Carpentier and coauthors assess the therapeutic possibilities of targeting brown adipose tissue, whose main energy substrate derives from intracellular lipolysis of triglycerides. Ye and colleagues review the relationship between adipocyte hypertrophy and obesity-related glucose and lipid dysmetabolism, ectopic fat accumulation, and cardiovascular disorders. And Berberich and Hegele provide a comprehensive overview of current thinking about dyslipidemia.
