an Endocrine Society Thematic Issue

Read our special collection of journal articles, published in 2021–2023, focused on neuroendocrinology! Curation of the collection was guided by Altmetric Attention Scores and Featured Article designations.

In Journal of the Endocrine Society, McIlwraith, Zhang, and Belsham discuss the regulation of phoenixin, a “multidimensional polypeptide” linked to the regulation of food intake, reproduction, stress, and inflammation that is a positive regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. McGlacken-Byrne, Achermann, and Conway discuss the clinical management of three girls presenting with delayed puberty and hypergonadotropic amenorrhea. In an Expert Endocrine Consult, Varlamov, Vila, and Fleseriu describe the perioperative management of patients with Cushing disease.

In Endocrinology, Lalonde-Larue and coauthors report that the Hippo transcriptional coactivators YAP and TAZ regulate luteinizing hormone release from gonadotropes. Lee and associates review the roles of sex hormones in glioblastoma cancer stem cells, which seem to show a sex difference. Liu, Porteous, and Herbison report observations demonstrating that in mice “the great majority of GnRH neuron distal dendrons are regulated by GABAergic inputs in a sex- and estrous cycle-dependent manner, with robust GABAB receptor-mediated inhibition being the primary mode of signaling.”

In Endocrine Reviews, van Iersel and coauthors discuss the need for hypothalamic-pituitary and other endocrine surveillance of childhood cancer survivors. Melmed and coauthors review the clinical biology of (usually benign) pituitary adenomas. Brito et al. analyze the disparate congenital and acquired mechanisms implicated in central precocious puberty.

In JCEM, Savvateeva and associates describe the results of somatic mutation profiling in head and neck paragangliomas. Yu and colleagues describe results from a multi-center study of the presentation, management, and outcomes of urinary bladder paraganglioma. And Lutsenko et al. report that two microRNAs are present at elevated levels in the plasma of patients with active acromegaly.
