Christopher McCartney, MD

Dr. McCartney completed medical school and internal medicine residency at the University of Mississippi (1992-1999), thereafter completing a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Virginia (UVA; 1999-2002). He was a faculty member at UVA from 2002 to 2023, and in early 2024 he moved to West Virginia University (WVU) to serve as the Department of Medicine's Vice Chair for Research.

Dr. McCartney's clinical research has largely focused on reproductive endocrinology and the pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). He has served on several NIH study sections including 2020–2023 service as a standing member of the Reproduction, Andrology, and Gynecology Study Section. Dr. McCartney has also had a long-standing interest in graduate medical education and mentorship: he was endocrinology fellowship program director at UVA (2011–2020); he was President of the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology and Metabolism (2018–2020); and he now serves as Program Lead for the Society-sponsored Medical School Engagement Program at WVU.

Dr. McCartney has held several service positions within the Endocrine Society. He served on the Annual Meeting Steering Committee (member 2012–2015, Clinical Science Chair 2022–2023); the Clinical Guidelines Committee (member 2016–2018, Chair 2018–2021); the Conflict of Interest Advisory Group (Chair 2021–2023); and the Ethics and Professionalism Committee (Co-Chair 2023–2024, ex officio member 2024–2025). He has also held editorial responsibilities at the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (Editorial Board 2021–2022, Associate Editor 2023–2024) and currently serves as an Endocrine Society Guideline Methodologist (2021–present).
