David Toro Tobon, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Mayo Clinic Scholar in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, and Nutrition at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
His research focuses on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance both clinical decision-making and the patient experience in endocrinology. His work spans two main areas: In thyroidology, he utilizes natural language processing and computer vision to enhance nodule risk stratification , reduce diagnostic overutilization , and develop predictive models for thyroid cancer. Concurrently, his work in the Care and AI Laboratory focuses on the human side of medicine, analyzing patient-clinician interactions through multimodal (audio and video) AI to study shared decision-making and create automated, patient-centered visit summaries. He leads initiatives to make these digital innovations accessible and practical for clinicians and is currently completing a Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence in Health.
A dedicated advocate for trainees and early career members, Dr. Toro Tobon is a graduate of the Endocrine Society's 2024 Clinical Endocrinology Leadership (ExCEL) Program and has published on the challenges of mentorship in endocrinology training. He brings prior governance experience to the Board, serving as a Board Member for the Midwest Endocrinology Society, an Intern for the ENDO 2025 Annual Meeting Steering Committee, and a former Trainee Observer on the American Thyroid Association Board of Directors.
