Dr. Maria G. Vogiatzi is an attending physician in the Division of Endocrinology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She leads the Adrenal and Puberty Center, which follows a large number of children with puberty and gonadal disorder. The Center is also the home for subspecialty programs for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), Klinefelter syndrome and other X and Y variations, and adrenal insufficiency. Working with these patients, Dr. Vogiatzi conducts clinical studies that test new therapies; examine disease outcomes; and assess the role of glucocorticoids, androgens, and sex steroids on various health parameters.
Dr. Vogiatzi has conducted studies examining the effect of growth hormone and various GnRHa, such as leuprolide and histrelin, on growth and adult height in children with CAH. She currently participates in trials that test new treatments for individuals with CAH, and in studies of neurocognitive development of infants with Klinefelter and other X and Y variations. Additional research is focused on studies of bone accrual and body composition in boys with Klinefelter and studies on mental health and quality of life in individuals with gonadal disorders.
In addition to her interest in gonadal disorders, Dr. Vogiatzi has conducted clinical and translational research on bone mass and fractures in thalassemia, examining the role of erythropoiesis and iron overload on the skeleton. The results of these studies established osteoporosis as a major complication in thalassemia and influenced the clinical management of affected individuals.
