Genevieve Neal-Perry, MD, PhD

Dr. Genevieve Neal-Perry has held the position of Robert A. Ross Distinguished Professor and Department Chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill, since April 2020. She is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist and holds a PhD in Pharmacology. With more than twenty years dedicated to women's health research, Dr. Neal-Perry has made significant contributions to the fields of menopausal neuroendocrinology, reproductive aging, and fertility. She has led pre-clinical and clinical studies aimed at elucidating the effects of nutritional deficiencies as well as somatic and reproductive aging on estrogen and vitamin D signaling in the female brain and their offspring. Her work has found that the brain’s response to estrogen signaling decreases with age and that maternal vitamin D deficiency programs reproductive dysfunction in female offspring that is characterized by ovulatory dysfunction.

Additionally, Dr. Neal-Perry has served as a co-investigator for key studies involving women experiencing both natural and surgical menopause, including the Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study (KEEPS) and the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN). She has played an instrumental role in clinical trials resulting in FDA approval of novel non-hormonal therapies for vasomotor symptoms, such as fezolinetant, a neurokinin-3 receptor antagonist, for which confirmatory preclinical studies were performed in her lab. She is clinically active, delivers comprehensive reproductive care, and is recognized as one of Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors and among Exceptional Women In Medicine.

Dr. Neal-Perry has held the position of Fellowship Director and is a dedicated mentor, serving as Principal Investigator for the Women’s Reproductive Health Research K12 at UNC since 2021. Dr. Neal-Perry has been an active member of the Endocrine Society since 2003. Her service to The Endocrine Society includes Vice President for Basic Research, Member at Large, and has held editorial board roles with Endocrinology and JCEM (Associate Editor). She has been a faculty member for the FLARE program for over a decade, and contributed to the Hormone Network, Publication, APOC, CODI, Basic Science Research Affairs Core, Board Member, Business Development Fund Advisory Board, and Special Programs committees, in addition to chairing multiple Endocrine Society Task Forces. Dr. Neal-Perry has participated in numerous NIH study sections and served on the NICHD Council. Currently, she holds the office of Vice President for the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology.

Dr. Neal-Perry is deeply dedicated to excellence in clinical care, research, and team member professional development, and she values opportunities to be a servant leader and to work closely with organizations like The Endocrine Society that prioritize these important areas in their mission.
