Ask the Expert: Cardiovascular Health

February 23, 2022

A Conversation with Shehzad Topiwala, MD

Are there any risk factors linked to cardiovascular health?

Certain ethno-racial groups such as Hispanics and South Asians are at a particularly elevated risk of cardiovascular problems especially in association with a heightened risk for type 2 diabetes.  Individuals who trace their descent to these geographic areas need to be screened at relatively younger ages for cardiovascular disease.  There are genetic influences that predispose these groups to a higher-than-average risk for mid-riff obesity ('belly-fat') which in turn drives a tendency to get diabetes and cardiac problems prematurely.

Is there any promising research on the horizon for people living with endocrine-related cardiovascular conditions?

There are exciting new medications such as Tirzepatide in development which will facilitate weight loss as well as improve metabolic parameters like blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol. Moreover, there are several new technological tools that can enable those living with cardiovascular problems to take better control of these conditions while easing the burden of living with them. Examples include smart insulin pens and automated insulin pumps integrated with modern sensors.

What advice would you give patients on managing chronic cardiovascular conditions?

I strongly suggest establishing long-term care with an endocrinologist who can partner with you in the optimal management of such chronic conditions. Collaborating with a specialist in the field can facilitate access to the latest devices and medications in order to aim for the best medical outcomes as well as longevity. who can partner with you in the optimal management of such chronic conditions.
