Obesity is a complex disease that is associated with a number of comorbidities, increased mortality, and reduced quality of life. Abdominal obesity is one of the components of metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of risk factors that increases an individual’s risk for chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This report, from 2015, details the epidemiology of obesity and MetS by age, race, and geographic location and includes data on the direct costs associated with obesity and MetS.
