Methimazole Titration and Initial Disease Severity in Graves Disease

For our 75th episode, we review a forthcoming Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism study examining how initial disease severity in Graves’ disease may influence methimazole titration. This retrospective longitudinal cohort study includes 152 patients treated at a single center, offering insight into real-world dosing and monitoring practices.

Host Chase Hendrickson, MD, MPH, MHCC, from Vanderbilt University, is joined by new regular contributor Jonea Lim, MD, from the University of Oklahoma, along with guest expert Elizabeth Pearce, MD, from Boston University, to discuss "Initial disease severity and methimazole titration for Graves' disease: a retrospective longitudinal cohort study" and its implications for clinical management.

Jonea Lim, MD
University of Oklahoma Health Campus

Dr. Lim is a board-certified adult endocrinologist practicing at the University of Oklahoma Health Campus. She earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. She completed residency in Internal Medicine and the Endocrine Fellowship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She currently serves as their Endocrinology Fellowship Program Director.

Elizabeth N. Pearce, MD, MSc 
Boston University

Dr. Elizabeth N. Pearce, MD, MSc, is a Professor of Medicine and the Endocrine Fellowship Program Director at Boston University. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard and a master's degree in epidemiology from the Boston University School of Public Health. She completed an internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a fellowship in endocrinology at Boston University. She was the 2018-2019 President of the American Thyroid Association (ATA). She serves as the Regional Coordinator for North America for the Iodine Global Network. She has served as a Deputy Editor at the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and as an Associate Editor for Endocrine Practice, Clinical Thyroidology, and Thyroid. She co-chaired the ATA's 2017 Thyroid in Pregnancy Guidelines Task Force and was a member of the task force for the 2026 revision. She serves on a World Health Organization guideline advisory panel on iodine nutrition assessment. Her research interests include iodine, thyroid function during pregnancy, and the effects of environmental disruptors on the thyroid. Dr. Pearce was the 2011 recipient of the American Thyroid Association's Van Meter Award for outstanding contributions to thyroid gland research and the 2018 Women in Thyroidology Woman of the Year.
