For our 77th episode, we discuss a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism investigating the role of immune signaling in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), now renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). Using a multiracial case-control design, the authors examined whether PCOS is characterized by chronic inflammation or whether immune dysregulation plays a more central role in its pathophysiology.

Together, they explore the implications of the syndrome's recent name change, review the study's unexpected findings of lower circulating inflammatory markers in women with PCOS, and discuss the challenges of disentangling the effects of adiposity, metabolism, and immune function. Anna Goldman, MD, received her medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She trained in internal medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she also served as chief resident. She did her fellowship training in endocrinology at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), during which she conducted research in andrology. Dr. Goldman was the associate program director for the endocrinology fellowship training program at BWH for many years. She is an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and is now in practice at Atrius Health. Her career focus is on patient care in andrology, transgender care, diabetes, and medical education.

Dr. Corrine Welt attended medical school at Cornell University Medical College in New York, then completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. She completed her fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she remained on faculty until 2014. She moved to the University of Utah as a Professor of Medicine in 2014 and now serves as the Chief of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes. Her clinical research interests include the genetics of reproductive disorders resulting in anovulation, including primary ovarian insufficiency and polycystic ovary syndrome. Her expertise in reproductive genetics spans both common and Mendelian genetic disorders.
